The recently-launched Reach Every Reader initiative, http://gse.harvard.edu/reach-every-reader forms a dynamic, 5-year partnership between the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), to both impact early literacy and build a process for the successful integration of research and practice. The initiative has 5 principal work streams: Personalized Screening; Personalized Early Reading Intervention and Evaluation; PreK Home and Family Engagement; Capacity Building for Teachers, Leaders, and Parents; and Integration and Building for the Future.
Working as part of the initiative leadership team and reporting directly to Executive Director Elizabeth City, the Associate Director is responsible for day-to-day operational and organizational leadership, project management of the HGSE-led grant, projects, and contribution to the infrastructure components of the initiative.
The major components include:
50% Day-to-Day Strategy & Operations
The majority of the Associate Director’s time will be spent managing the day-to-day operations of this dynamic, cross-university collaboration designed to make significant progress on the crisis in early literacy. The Associate Director will directly manage initiative staff and strategize on critical collaboration and communication across universities, faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and school districts. At its peak, the initiative will employ approximately 75 full and part-time individuals.
30% Project Management
The Associate Director will work closely with postdoctoral fellows and project managers, in addition to faculty advisors and project leads, to project manage the cross-functional grant products and services, with specific emphasis on the projects led by HGSE faculty.
20% Grant Infrastructure
The remainder of the Associate Director’s time will be spent contributing to the fifth grant project - building for the future and infrastructure, led by Executive Director Elizabeth City. The grant intends to create conscious structures to promote integration among the workstreams, enable continuous learning and adaptation, and create new methodologies, tools, and infrastructure for data collection and sharing so that future researchers can build on this work.
With the Executive Director, oversee the major strategic elements of the initiative and manage day-to-day operations. Develop and implement strategic systems and processes to support the success of project activities.
Direct and contribute to the framing and execution of events and communications (product briefs, website, convenings, etc.) to diverse public audiences and organizational partners.
Create assets (e.g., policy and practice briefs, bylines, op-eds, webinar/PowerPoint materials, etc.) that document infrastructure and learning.
Manage the financial activities of the project, including providing strategic analytics, managing the budgeting and forecasting process, and acting as key liaison and in coordination with HGSE finance and other internal partners.
In partnership with the Executive Director, contribute to ongoing strategic development of the portfolio of projects. Develop and oversee project plans, track ongoing progress, and perform project resourcing and budgeting. Effectively communicate status, collaborate and problem-solve with relevant stakeholders. Identify, mitigate, and manage risk on projects.
Manage a diverse team consisting of staff, postdoctoral fellows, and students.
Other duties as assigned.
