Significant experience and responsibility developing and managing the sponsored research activities of a complex research-intensive institution such as a university, research facility, or medical center.Additional Qualifications and Skills:Advanced degree preferred. Candidate must demonstrate ability to handle multiple tasks, work collaboratively, manage effectively in a complex research environment, provide guidance on all research administration- and research compliance activities, conduct regular and effective training for staff at all levels of a large organization, and develop and implement policies. Exceptional written and verbal communications skills as well as proven strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.Additional Information:All formal written offers will be made by FAS Human Resources.Department:Research Administration ServicesPre-Employment Screening:Credit, Criminal, Education, IdentityJob Function:Finance Job-Specific Responsibilities:The Associate Dean for Research Administration reports to the FAS Dean for Administration and Finance with secondary reporting to the SEAS Executive Dean for Administration and Finance. Works closely with FAS Finance, FAS Operations, FAS and SEAS Academic Leadership, Office of the Vice Provost for Research, Office for Sponsored Programs, Office of Technology Development, and Office of the General Counsel. Oversees operations of FAS Research Administration Services (RAS). Manages a team of more than twenty-five staff responsible for the following:
Pre-award services, (research development; proposal preparation, review, school-level approval; and FASTRAC temporary services team)
Research finance and compliance
Research compliance (COI, Export Controls, Embryonic Stem Cell Research Oversight, and Research Misconduct)
Implementation and administration of research policy and oversight of compliance activities for sponsored programs and other research activities in FAS and SEAS
The Associate Dean is a member of the senior staff of the FAS Dean of Administration and Finance and participates as a FAS/SEAS representative and liaison on multiple FAS, SEAS and University-wide committees, working groups, and special initiatives. Represents FAS/SEAS on the University’s Sponsored Administrative Leadership Executive Committee (SALC-EC). Partners with the SEAS Executive Dean for Administration and Finance, SEAS Area Directors, FAS Divisional Administrative Deans, Science Lab Directors, and Department, Center, and Area administrators across FAS and SEAS to provide expertise and to deliver effective research administration services to ensure the efficient and effective administration of sponsored programs. Collaborates with other RAS senior managers to build strong working relationships with FAS, SEAS and University administrative, financial, and administration offices. Makes recommendations on policies, procedures, and processes to facilitate compliance with University policies, federal laws and regulations, and sponsor policies. Interprets policies and regulations and works with relevant faculty and administrative committees to develop effective policies and procedures and ensures the new policies and procedures are implemented. Initiates education and outreach activities to keep the research community informed on matters related to research administration. RAS support areas include: 1) Strategic services for faculty seeking grant funding; 2) Sponsored research proposal development, review, award and financial management; 3) temporary research administration consulting services for FAS and SEAS (FASTRAC); 4) Creation, implementation and upkeep of research policy, systems, and procedures; 5) Professional development of researchers and research administrators; 6) Research integrity guidance; 7) Financial compliance monitoring and audit support; 8) Research compliance oversight (Conflict of Interest (COI) & export controls); and 9) Administrative staffing support for the Committee on Research Policy (CRP), Committee on Professional Conduct (CPC).
The Associate Dean for Research Administration represents FAS and SEAS on University wide research topics. The incumbent partners closely with the University Research Leadership, specifically the Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) and the Office for Sponsored Programs (OSP).
