CHAPLAIN TO THE INSTITUTE AND ASSOCIATE DEAN, Office of Religious, Spiritual, and Ethical Life (ORSEL), to serve the broad MIT community and create, promote, and support an open and inclusive environment that honors the diversity of the campus community’s spiritual and religious traditions/perspectives on ethics; and oversee the ORSEL and over thirty affiliated chaplains representing many of the world’s religions/spiritualties/secular practices. Will collaborate with a group of chaplain conveners to develop and implement innovative programs serving the needs of the MIT student body; partner with campus support services to ensure the spiritual, emotional, and ethical well-being of the MIT community is met; create and promote opportunities for campus conversations on the intersection of faith and science; actively build community and advocate on behalf of students, ensuring all efforts are conducted without bias; provide individual spiritual counseling/direction; preside at Institute events; and partner with faculty, staff, and administrators in response to campus trauma/unrest/ethical dilemma/public civil disobedience; and serve in an advisory capacity on matters of policy and pastoral/religious/spiritual/ethical/social justice issues.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: master’s degree in divinity, religious studies, ethics, or related field; seven years’ experience working in spiritual and religious life or related capacity; excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication, and public speaking skills; record of managing with influence throughout a large organization/institution/congregation; commitment to diversity and social justice; experience collaborating with diverse groups of religious/spiritual/secular leaders and understanding of the intersection between religion, spirituality, and secular traditions/practices; experience conducting interfaith services and providing spiritual counseling and direction; understanding of the impact of one’s role as a leader within a larger community; and experience in a college student services office/university setting.
