Additional Information: Duties and Responsibilities Continued:
Management oversight responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Supervises 6 direct reports in various functional areas, including HR, IT, Finance, Sponsored Programs Administration, Operations/Facilities, and administrative support;
Manages and oversees the School's financial resources, including the development of annual and long-range operating and capital budgets, the development and negotiation of financial alternatives to fund academic programs, and the management of relations with external funding sources;
Manages and oversees the School’s research administration function that provides grant management support for primary investigators (PIs) and appropriate compliance guidance to School senior leadership, research administration staff, PIs, and academic departments, consistent with federal regulations and the requirements of non-federal funders;
Manages and oversees the School's physical plant and grounds, including facility engineering and construction, physical plant maintenance, administrative space planning, security, Environmental Health and Safety compliance, and related facility operations;
Manages and oversees the School's human resources including planning for and the implementation of strategies to maximize the School's human resources, to increase staff and faculty diversity, and to maintain a dedicated and highly-qualified work force;
Manages and oversees the School's information technology infrastructure and other strategic initiatives and long-range planning processes in support of academic programs and administrative operations;
Manages and oversees the School’s emergency management and business continuity functions.
The Executive Dean has a dotted-line reporting relationship to the University Executive Vice President, participates actively in the Administrative Deans affinity group, and works collaboratively with University Central Administration leaders and the Administrative Deans of the other Harvard Schools on various cross-School projects and in various University-wide forums.

Works closely with the dean of the faculty to plan and manage the School's strategic initiatives in a number of areas. As such, the Executive Dean has a special responsibility for ensuring the coordination of all administrative and business matters with the academic mission and programs of the School, and for promoting communication between and among administrative and academic units in support of School priorities and initiatives;
Works closely with the dean for academic affairs to ensure coordination between the academic/research activities of the School and administrative functions, as well as appropriate support of the academic/research activities by the administrative, financial, and business functions;
Manages and coordinates community and government relations, and provides leadership on cooperative ventures and new initiatives involving city, state, national, and international entities;
Manages and evaluates the School's participation in ongoing business ventures involving affiliated institutions, the Boston and Massachusetts business communities, and other Boston institutions, and takes the lead in developing new lines of business and initiatives to strengthen Boston institutions' preeminence in science and technology;
Works collaboratively with the members of the Dean's senior leadership team, as well as with the School’s leaders of the education, student service, communications, and fundraising administrative teams.
