Additional Information:This position will be based in Boston. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, you will begin your work remotely. All remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA*, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT, and WA). The fully remote nature of this job is only temporary. Once the University and your supervisor determine that it is appropriate, in-person on-campus work will be required as a condition of continued employment. This department actively supports some remote work (within a state in which Harvard is registered to do business) where business and team needs allow. Individual flexible and remote work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process. *Note: Harvard employees working in California must be exempt.

Position Description:

Philanthropic giving provides crucial resources to enable and sustain the academic programs of Harvard Medical School. The Endowments and Gift team in the HMS Finance Office works to operationalize endowment and current-use gift resources in support of the HMS mission.

The Endowments and Gifts Team serves a spectrum of customers, including HMS leadership, Quad-based research and academic departments, and departments within Harvard’s affiliated hospitals. The team develops and maintains policy around these resources; conducts financial operations and analysis, and communicates with dozens of offices on matters related to policy, fund terms, budgets, and spending. We work closely with the budgeting, planning, and accounting teams within the Finance Office, with the HMS Development Office, and with the University’s central financial and development offices.

Typical core duties:

• Provide general accounting support, policy explanation/interpretation, and problem resolution related to endowment and gift funds

• Develop, disseminate and explain annual endowment budgets to 60 hospital affiliate departments, affiliate finance offices, 15+ Quad departments, and internal finance colleagues;

• Provides guidance to hospital affiliate departments with reimbursement requests, including fund terms, policy interpretations and payment expedition

• Independently manages monthly, quarterly, and year end closings

• Manages fund deficits and excess balances

• Support department efforts to improve processes, systems, and records

• Independently prepare and present financial and data analyses as requested

• Understand and apply financial policies, compliance rules, and accounting principles

• Oversee and delivers training to Quad and affiliate clients on processes and systems

• Ensure financial compliance with University policies and procedures and applicable legal rules and regulations
