Additional Information:All offers to be made by HLS Human Resources.Department:Library AdministrationPre-Employment Screening:Education, IdentityJob Function:Library Duties & Responsibilities:The Assistant Director for Outreach & Community Engagement is a new and exciting role at Harvard Law School Library. Under the general direction of the Executive Director, this role cultivates connections between the Library and its community, including HLS faculty, students, and staff, Harvard University, and Harvard Library product users.

In this role, you will promote HLS Library services, resources, and programs to create awareness and engagement supporting Law School research, teaching, and learning. You will coordinate and run events that increase Library visibility and build relationships with our community, in particular, Law School and University departments, including HLS Communications and Dean of Students office, and Harvard Library Communications.

You will work with library teams in the promotion of library developed technologies, services and products, such as Perma.cc, H2O, and the Caselaw Access Project. Additionally, you will oversee the Library’s print, online, and social media publications and strategize with Library units to promote initiatives.

Brand and Strategy

  • Communicates Library’s mission and values across print, online, and social media platforms, including annual report, print and electronic newsletters, and other publications

  • Enhances Library’s brand by employing and encouraging consistent use of voice, style, content, and grammar across the organization

  • Leads curation, writing, and editing of content to enhance perceptions of the Library and engagement with Library resources, services, and programs, trains staff who are delegated the responsibility of posting to blog and other social media

  • Identifies and develops the broad messages and themes to use in marketing the Library to various constituents

  • Lead Library units in promotion of projects and initiatives to academic and legal communities

  • Proactively seeks collaboration opportunities and builds relationships with internal and external entities

  • Collaborates with administrative staff to assess impact of library messages and brand

  • Participates in Library’s strategic planning efforts Develops and manages a yearly strategic marketing budget, including library events and promotional materials


  • Organizes Library events, including presence at orientation activities, Notes & Comment, open houses and showcases for HLS units, Library salons, and other programming to engage HLS community

  • Facilitates co-sponsorship of events with Law School units, student organizations, and Harvard Library Maintains regular tour schedule and policy for HLS, Harvard, alumni, visitors, and other groups, updates unified tour scripts annually

  • Provides leadership in Library staff presence at HLS community events


  • Collaborates with Emerging Technologies & Assessment Librarian to seek community input through surveying and other feedback opportunities

  • Serves as liaison to HLS Communications, Dean of Students Office, HUHS, and other units providing community engagement services and resources

  • Serve on School-wide and University-wide committees, participate in the intellectual life of the School

  • As needed, serves as surrogate for Executive and Associate Directors at Library-sponsored events and represents the Library at campus events Represents Harvard through active participation in relevant national and international professional organizations

Additional Responsibilities

  • Develops and manages an outreach and events budget

  • Supervises the work of assigned staff

  • Participate in orientation and training for new staff
