Minimum of two years of relevant experience providing reference services in an archival repository or library special collections unit, preferably in an academic setting.Additional Qualifications:Strong public services background with experience providing reference and research services and advanced knowledge of print and electronic reference sources. Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to work successfully in a collaborative, team-based environment. Demonstrated ability to manage workflow and multiple tasks; attention to detail; negotiation and problem-solving skills. Reading knowledge of at least one foreign language preferred, as is broad knowledge of American, modern European culture and history or history of medicine and science. Department:Center for the History of Medicine, Countway LibraryPre-Employment Screening:Criminal, Education, IdentityJob Function:Library Duties & Responsibilities:Under the supervision of the Public Services Librarian, the Reference Archivist has primary responsibility for providing on-site and remote reference services and bibliographic instruction to faculty, students, researchers, visiting scholars, and the general public for manuscript collections and the archival records of the Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, as well as other collections held by the Center for the History of Medicine, Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine. The Reference Archivist participates in the regular supervision of the reading room and reference desk; assists researchers in accessing both traditional print and electronic resources available locally and beyond Harvard; consults with library clientele on research problems; recommends appropriate tools and methodologies for discovering materials appropriate to their research; and provides research support for Center initiatives. The Reference Archivist also assists in developing public programming and outreach activities (including serving on Harvard University Library and Longwood campus committees), including research and installation assistance for exhibits; conducting tours and leading orientation sessions; supporting classroom programs and liaising with students; maintaining usage and user study statistics; and maintaining and developing content for websites and other promotional and publicity-related materials. Additionally, the Reference Archivist will serve as the Center's liaison to the Office of Human Research Administration Institutional Review Board and the Office of the Dean to facilitate the use of access-protected records as appropriate.
