  • As a key member of the FAS development team the Managing Director leads the creation of a robust direct response marketing strategy. Oversees segmentation and ask amount strategies for broadcast appeals, works with the Associate and Assistant Director to develop solicitation plans across email, phone, and mail to renew previous donors, retrieve lapsed donors, and acquire new donors from College alumni, GSAS alumni, and parent pools.

  • Develops, monitors, and evaluates performance metrics to assess results and adjusts strategies and tactics throughout the year to achieve optimal results.

  • In partnership with the Harvard College Fund management team, develops and executes direct response marketing strategies that support the goals of reunion and class-based fundraising.

  • Partners with the Donor Relations team to informs strategies for broad stewardship and cultivation of Associates Program and 1636 Loyalty Society constituents. Partners with FAS colleagues to support the growth of donors and flexible current use dollars.

  • Leads direct marketing team, including two direct reports, and manages departmental budget.

  • Serves as primary partner and requester for direct response marketing to FAS Communication and Donor Engagement team, which provides creative services for all of FAS Development, including content creation, multimedia vendor management, print production, copyediting, and design.

  • Partners particularly closely with the FAS Communication and Donor Experience team to coordinate calendars and strategies, and to share resources. Also represents the Direct Response Marketing team in AA&D and University-wide communications discussions and planning sessions.

  • Cultivates favorable relationships with colleagues across departments, including, but not limited to, FAS Development, Operations, HPAC, the HAA, Academic & Development Coordination (ADC), and Alumni and Donor Services (ADS) as well as external partners and vendors. Also collaborates regularly with the AA&D central communications, donor relations, and events teams.

  • In concert with FAS goals, works periodically on special projects in collaboration with the Senior Director, senior management, and FAS fundraising staff.

Alumni Affairs and Development (AA&D) comprises the University Development Office (UDO), Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Development, AA&D Resources, and the Harvard Alumni Association (HAA). There is a unique relationship between the University and the FAS fundraising operations, resulting from a long history in which University fundraising ultimately grew out of College fundraising.

Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Development

FAS Development is responsible for the fundraising efforts supporting the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, including Harvard College, the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. FAS Development staff work with Harvard College donors, alumni, parents, and friends who provide critical support for the FAS and often for other parts of the University.

This full-time exempt position on the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Development team reports to the Senior Director of Development, Major Gifts, and is responsible for overseeing the strategy, execution, and analysis of all direct response marketing that generates philanthropic support for the FAS. Goals for this role are oriented around generating participation from parents and alumni with a focus on raising flexible current use funds for the core mission of the FAS (Harvard College Fund, Graduates School of Arts and Sciences Fund, and a variety of strategic priorities).

As a key member of the development team the Managing Director will partner with colleagues across Alumni Affairs and Development (AA&D) and FAS teams. The Managing Director will set the strategy for Direct Response Marketing in alignment with the goals of the FAS and in partnership with Major Gifts, Gift Planning, and the Harvard College Fund team. Content creation sits within the Content Strategy arm of the Communications and Donor Engagement team and is created in concert with the fundraising strategy and goals set forth by the Managing Director.

Integral to the success of this role is the oversight of analysis and reporting for direct response marketing efforts. This includes the development, in partnership with the Operations and Alumni and Development Services teams, of a robust suite of reports and tools that analyze past results to shape future decisions with the goals of increasing donor participation and flexible, current use funding in support of the FAS.

The Managing Director also manages a team of two professional staff that develop and execute integrated marketing strategies for cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and engagement across mail, email, and phone; and partners with Communications, Gift Planning and Harvard Alumni Association teams to ensure coordination of messaging and outreach to shared audiences. A critical measure of success is the ability to leverage direct marketing efforts to generate leads for the Major Gifts team through inspiring and securing new $1,000+ donors each year.
