MATHEMATICS LECTURER, Experimental Study Group (part-time, 50% for the academic year), to teach the first year mathematics curriculum in calculus, multivariable calculus, and differential equations (including coordinating topics, homework sets, exams, etc.); and teach computing as related to mathematics and other scientific disciplines, including biology and physics. Will advise first-year students, supervise undergraduate TAs, and engage with the broader ESG community. There is also an opportunity to take part in a wide range of interdisciplinary activities and seminars. This position is ideal for those interested in pedagogic innovation as well as student learning and well-being. ESG (https://esg.mit.edu/) is an interdisciplinary program for approximately fifty-five first-year students who are taught mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and philosophy in small classes of typically eight to twelve students. It is an academic community comprised of undergraduates, including approximately forty upper-class TAs and instructors, with its own classrooms, lounge, kitchen, and staff offices. The program is dedicated to helping students identify their academic passions, take charge of their education, and think outside of the traditional box. Similarly, ESG staff are committed to educational innovation while teaching students the basic curricula in each subject. At any one time, ESG typically has several educational pilots that experiment with a variety of teaching modalities.
