MECHANICAL ENGINEER ASSOCIATE, Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC), to support PSFC’s mission of advancing a physical understanding of plasmas and their application to deliver clean, sustainable, societal-scale fusion energy. The primary responsibilities will be to participate in the design, analysis, fabrication, assembly, and testing of technical equipment required to support a wide range of plasma physics and fusion energy research, (e.g., superconducting magnets; cryogenic, vacuum, and high-temperature systems; plasma diagnostics; high-power radiofrequency equipment; etc.); work closely with others on the PSFC engineering team and faculty, staff, and students; and write clear procedures, documenting analysis and test results, and presenting findings for critical review in team meetings. Providing education and mentoring will also be key aspects of this position. PSFC (https://www.psfc.mit.edu/) is a world-leader in the research of plasma physics and the development of fusion energy. It has a sixty-year history of relentless innovation, technical achievement, and dedicated education and has been central to several recent fusion breakthroughs.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: B.S. or higher in mechanical engineering or closely related field; two years’ relevant experience (may include work experience gained as an undergraduate) developing and working with complex mechanical systems; ability to own engineering projects, from establishing the design requirements through final assembly and testing; hands-on experience with complex mechanical systems; ability to conduct clear, direct communication with a larger team; willingness to learn and take on technical challenges; and an interest in collaborating in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. PREFERRED: experience with computer-aided design (CAD) software (e.g., SolidWorks) and finite-element analysis (e.g., COMSOL), hands-on experience with the fabrication and assembly of mechanical systems, and experience with the systems noted above or related systems.
