The Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) invites scholars who conduct research on the teaching profession to apply for a faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Education, Associate Professor of Education (untenured), or Professor of Education (tenured).
We seek candidates who conduct methodologically rigorous studies into teachers’ professional lives, including the influence of policy, school organizations, professional associations, peers, and unions on teachers’ work. Potential candidates include those who study: working conditions; teacher socialization; teacher hiring, attrition, and retention; teachers as members of school organizations; teacher learning on the job; teacher evaluation and compensation; teacher job design; teacher professional associations and unions. We also seek applications from those who study the intersection of the teaching profession and educational policy. Candidates who conduct comparative studies across professions or of the teaching profession across nations are also encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to candidates whose research relies on collecting primary data. We especially encourage applications from women and minorities.
Candidates should have a doctorate in education or a related field. Successful candidates will have an excellent record of rigorous scholarship appropriate for rank and a commitment to teaching and mentoring. Candidates for a ladder faculty appointment will be considered if they will have completed all requirements for the doctorate by the start of the 2018-19 academic year.
At HGSE, our mission is to conduct high-quality research on issues related to education, and to teach, advise, and mentor a diverse community of graduate students, both at the doctoral and master’s levels. We therefore seek candidates with excellent pedagogical skills, including the ability to engage students in classroom discussions and other non-lecture forms of learning. Candidates should be well prepared to engage in collaborative or supervised research with graduate students interested in the practice of preparing teachers.

• a cover letter describing their research agenda, teaching, and other relevant experience • a curriculum vitae and a list of three references with complete addresses and phone numbers • a statement of teaching philosophy • three scholarly publications
The committee will request letters of recommendation and evidence of effective teaching from a small group of finalists. The search committee will begin reviewing applications on October 15, 2017, and will continue until the position is filled.
