Working at MIT offers opportunities, an environment, a culture – and benefits – that just aren’t found together anywhere else. If you’re curious, motivated, want to be part of a unique community, and help shape the future – then take a look at this opportunity.

Information on MIT’s COVID-19 vaccination requirement can be found at the bottom of this posting.

POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, Laboratory for Nuclear Science (LNS)-Experimental Nuclear Physics Group, to work on an experiment preparing to run on the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory that will search for a non-zero value of the electric dipole moment of the neutron (nEDM). This nEDM search is an investigation into Physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM), as a detectable nEDM would indicate the existence of strong CP violation, which is not present in the Standard Model but which is a feature of most extensions to the Standard Model. A non-zero nEDM would also help explain the baryon-antibaryon asymmetry in the Universe. The current chief MIT responsibility in the nEDM experiment is testing and implementing an Atomic Beam Source (ABS) of polarized 3He, which will be used to minimize the uncertainty due to non-uniformities in the experiment’s magnetic field. This project is well along but still has important steps to complete before the ABS is ready to be installed in the experiment. During the subsequent running and analysis of the experiment, the MIT group expects to play a number of important roles.
