POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, Civil and Environmental Engineering-Howland Lab ( , to join a group that studies the flow physics of Earth’s atmosphere and the modeling, optimization, and control of renewable energy generation systems. This work is focused at the intersection of fluid mechanics, weather and climate modeling, uncertainty quantification, and optimization and control with an emphasis on renewable energy systems. The lab uses synergistic approaches including simulations, laboratory and field experiments, and modeling to understand the operation of renewable energy systems, with the goal of improving the efficiency, predictability, and reliability of low-carbon energy generation. The proposed research project is focused on assessing the risk to wind power generation to climate-change driven wind resource uncertainty. Responsibilities include developing multi-fidelity wind farm simulation methodologies which are driven by large-scale meteorological variables derived from general circulation models (GCMs); developing approaches for multi-fidelity uncertainty quantification; developing methodologies for wind farm siting and design under wind resource uncertainty; interfacing with the greater Howland Lab group in a shared working environment and in group meetings; and interfacing with the greater fluid mechanics, energy, and atmospheric science communities.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field; knowledge of and demonstrated skillset in computational fluid dynamics, uncertainty quantification, optimization, computer programming, high-performance computing, data analysis, and technical writing; ability to work and communicate effectively in a multidisciplinary research team; a track record of publications and scientific output; self-motivation; ability to work independently; and excellent organizational, analytical, and writing skills.
