The Department of Physics at Harvard University invites applications for a Preceptor in Physics. Working closely with faculty and staff in the Department of Physics, the preceptor will oversee all aspects of small-group instruction in both the laboratory and discussion section components of essential introductory Physics courses, targeted to a wide range of students and including applications in physical sciences, engineering, and life sciences.
Science preceptors supervise and train a team of teaching fellows, play a leading role in the laboratory support team, and collaborate with faculty to develop innovative course materials including problem sets, examinations, hands-on learning activities, and guided/independent student projects.
This full-time, benefits eligible position is expected to start on July 1, 2021, and will be initially for a term of one year, with the possibility of reappointment up to a maximum of eight years total. If reappointed, in subsequent years the position will be a 10-month appointment during the academic year (Aug. 1 to May 31), but benefits and salary continue for 12 months. Reappointment is contingent upon performance, curricular need, position availability, and divisional dean approval.
Candidates are required to have teaching experience in physics.
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in physics (ideally experimental physics) or a closely allied field, or should be on track to complete the degree by the start of the appointment. Candidates should have strong organizational, written, and interpersonal communication skills, and should be able to work effectively with course instructors and teaching assistants. The ideal candidate will have contributed to the design of problem sets, as well as experience in teaching student laboratory sessions.
