  • Ability to identify and solve problems independently. Outstanding organizational and managerial skills.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including attention to detail.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work well with individuals at very senior levels, the ability to develop rapport with a variety of individuals, and experience working with subtle and/or complex institutional political dynamics. Some prior supervisory experience.

  • Ability to handle confidential material with discretion.

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Experience in maintaining databases and web technology preferred.

Additional Information:This position is based in Boston, but the work may be done fully or primarily remote. Any remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA*, CT, MA, MD, ME, NH, NY, RI, and VT). Individual flexible and remote work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process. *Note: Harvard employees working in California must be exempt.

Position Description:

The Program Director for Academic Affairs serves as a senior member of the team overseeing appointment and promotion processes for professorial candidates at Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Dental Medicine. The Program Director provides critical input, technical advice, and guidance to members of search and evaluation committees for professorial faculty appointments. Therefore, a PhD in biological, epidemiologic, or related sciences is considered key to success in this role. The person in this position will bring a broad perspective on cutting-edge research in a wide range of disciplines, and will aid search committees in identifying and evaluating the widest possible pool of faculty candidates.

The Program Director serves as a liaison between the Dean’s office and the appointing academic departments to advise regarding the preparation and content of promotion materials. The Program Director will serve as the representative of the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at search and evaluation committee meetings.

Responsibilities include:

Management

  • Liaison between the Dean’s office and the appointing academic departments to advise regarding the preparation and content of promotion materials

  • Representative of the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at search and evaluation committee meetings

  • With associate dean and dean for faculty affairs, address all issues related to professorial appointments and promotions

  • Supervise one Faculty Promotions Coordinator, a supporting staff member of the professorial promotion team

  • Prepare internal and external reports regarding the status of promotions

  • Assure maintenance and quality of appointment records

  • Oversee key promotion-related activities, e.g., the monthly promotion committee meetings, intake and review of all new submissions, endowed professorships, communications with the Office of the Provost and departments on outcomes, etc.

Policy Implementation

  • Apply detailed understanding of faculty appointment criteria and policies; coordinate with department leaders to support adherence to faculty appointment criteria and guidelines

  • Educate faculty and department leaders around components and rationale of the Faculty of Medicine CV

  • Initiate review of exception requests and document decisions

Faculty Development Activities

  • Meet one on one with faculty regarding CV optimization and career advancement

  • Participate in presentations on CV preparation and faculty career advancement
