Chan School of Public Health to support our mission of health research and education, and to be a part of the oldest institution of higher learning in the country!Department:Genetics and Complex DiseasesPre-Employment Screening:Criminal, IdentityJob Function:Research Duties & Responsibilities:A position is open for a Research Assistant in the laboratory of Dr. Gökhan Hotamışlıgil, one of the leading labs studying the interactions between metabolic and immune responses, a rapidly growing field now recognized as “immunometabolism.” Our research focuses on understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying metabolic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and asthma, with the goal of developing novel preventative and therapeutic treatments. (For recent reviews/papers see: Nature. 2017 Feb 8;542(7640):177-185, Science. 2015 Jul 31;349(6247):500-6, Cell Metab. 2015 Sep 1;22(3):381-97). We are looking for an enthusiastic Research Assistant, who is excited about the work we do in our lab and wants to create a valuable scientific contribution to our research and our field.

The Research Assistant will work on projects that mostly focus on the functional and structural reorganization of the liver’s endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria in the context of obesity and diabetes. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn advanced techniques in molecular biology, protein and RNA analysis, mammalian tissue culture, biochemical assays, and cutting-edge imaging techniques. The Research Assistant will follow up on experiments by organizing, processing and reporting data. The incumbent is expected to be fully engaged in the intellectual activities of the lab, and to actively participate in lab meetings and discussions.

Responsibilities of the Research Assistant include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Maintaining cell cultures and performing cell culture experiments

  • Processing mouse blood and tissue samples for protein and RNA analysis

  • Maintaining mouse colonies, including breeding and genotyping

  • Performing mouse metabolic physiology experiments

  • Quantification and analysis of large-scale imaging data

  • Analysis, interpretation, and reporting of data

  • Participation and intellectual contribution to lab meetings, journal clubs, data discussions, department seminars, and the Sabri Ülker Symposium

  • Other duties as assigned
