RESPIRATORY THERAPY INSTRUCTOR

Job Description:

Primary Responsibilities:

Performs all duties of a respiratory therapist (refer to competency model for therapist), including on-call sign up and weekend coverage when needed.

Provides education to respiratory therapists and other professionals on an ongoing basis. Reminds and helps staff daily with procedures and tasks.

Arranges in house schedules for classroom teaching and clinical instruction. Sends out electronic educational tools to staff when needed.

Attends meetings and maintains close relationships with medical director, intensivists and neonatologists.

Develops and conducts lectures, demonstration, and exams for staff and students in the interpretation and clinical application of results.

Trains new staff and signs off their department competencies, and continues to be a resource for new or less experienced staff

Serves as a liaison and facilitator for instructors from affiliated programs, using this clinical site, to ensure optimal learning conditions for students.

Arranges and may assist in development and presentation of in house lectures and seminars for medical and nursing staff, nursing students, and other healthcare workers. Maintains certification to teach ACLS and NRP.

Maintains educational records and competencies for staff. Is responsible for the maintenance of certifications and licensing in employee files, along with the manager. Reminds staff when expiration dates are approaching.

Serves as leader in the manager’s absence and provides leadership in the charge role. Approves and manages Kronos payroll in manager’s absence.

Works with manager and outside vendors in coordinating inservices and education regarding new procdures and equipment.

Shares the responsibility for maintaining inventory with the manager and does frequent checks on supply levels and alerts manager of ordering needs.

Checks the equipment levels kept in other areas outside the RT department to make sure staff assigned there are keeping it stocked. Helps stock shelves.

Required Qualifications:

Registered Respiratory Therapist with a Massachusetts license.

Three to five years of related experience.

Verbal and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with members of the allied health disciplines, patients, and patients' families.

Works accurately under stress.

Ability to teach complex respiratory therapy modalities to all levels of students and staff. Ability to evaluate students' performance on a clinical and academic level, and to apply discipline, if necessary.

Maintains membership in American Association for Respiratory Care.

Serves as a back-up to the manager on the disaster response team.

Serves on interdisciplinary committees within the hospital.

Demonstrates and provides leadership to all staff.

Participates in quality improvement projects.

Is involved in new product evaluation/trials.

Provides feedback to manager on the performance of peers.

Creates and oversees daily assignments in the manager’s absence.
