Position Description

The Department South Asian Studies at Harvard University seeks applications for a senior preceptor in Tamil. The appointment is expected to begin on July 1, 2024. The senior preceptor will be responsible for teaching the Tamil language at all levels and across multiple genres and time periods. Administrative duties include undergraduate advising in the role of Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department. The position is for five years and renewable contingent upon performance, enrollments, and curricular need.

Basic Qualifications

The successful applicant should have experience in teaching Tamil in a university context, and at all levels. The applicant should be an expert in current methods of language pedagogy and should also have demonstrable experience in university advising at the undergraduate level. Native or near-native fluency in the Tamil language with graduate-level training in Tamil and related fields of study (such as literature, religion, anthropology, or linguistics) is also required.

Additional Qualifications

Applicant should ideally have a record of experience of conducting research in Tamilnadu or in other Tamil-speaking regions, as well as knowledge of other South Asian languages.

  4. Teaching materials. Please submit a list of courses taught in reverse chronological order, indicating whether the courses were taught remotely. A list of materials taught would also be helpful (grammars and dictionaries used, along with a representative list of texts taught at the intermediate and advanced levels). Please submit formal syllabi and teaching evaluations.

  5. Statement describing efforts to encourage diversity, inclusion, and belonging, including past, current, and anticipated future contributions in these areas.

  6. Names and contact information of at least three referees, who will be asked by a system-generated email to upload a letter of recommendation once the candidate’s application has been submitted. Three letters of recommendation are required, and the application is considered complete only when at least three letters have been received.
