Additional Information:The First-Year Experience Office, located within the Residential Life unit of the DSO, is committed to expanding the conditions that enable all first-year students to experience an unparalleled educational journey that is intellectually, socially, and personally transformative. The Senior Assistant Dean will supervise four resident deans, who in turn, manage seventy resident proctors. The Senior Assistant Dean is responsible for providing oversight and direction to the housing and residential education components of the first-year student experience, including advising, enforcement of standards, and community-building. The Senior Assistant Dean is responsible for establishing a culture that strives for excellence and ensures compatibility and mutual respect among the FYE team.

As part of the Residential Life team, the Senior Assistant Dean will work closely with the House communities, stakeholders such as the Office of Undergraduate Education, HUHS, and HUDS, to support the implementation of a four-year integrated experience at the College. The position will play an important role in assessing and evaluating the existing programs and any new initiatives within the DSO. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Students, the Senior Assistant Dean is a member of the leadership team in the Office of the Dean of Students and an administrative member of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The position requires strict confidentiality, as well as strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.

Department:Dean of Students OfficePre-Employment Screening:Credit, Criminal, Education, IdentitySchedule:9-5pm M-F, evening and weekends at times.Job Function:Faculty & Student Services Duties & Responsibilities:The Senior Assistant Dean of Residential Life and First-Year Students is a member of the senior staff within the Residential Life team in the Dean of Students Office. This position serves two functions. It holds responsibility for overseeing the First Year Experience Office and for building bridges between the first-year programming and the other residential communities at the College. As part of the senior staff within the Residential Life team, the Senior Assistant Dean works closely with the Associate Dean of Students, effectively serving as a second-in-command for all issues related to residential life. Serves in the absence of the Associate Dean of Students in all matters related to Residential Life and First-Year Students.

  • Supervise the four Resident Deans of the First Year Experience. Responsible for hiring, onboarding, training, coaching, evaluating, development, managing and all personnel issues related to these staff.

  • Lead and oversee residential life initiatives to orient and support the incoming class, including conversations with Admissions, solicitation of family letters, matching of roommates and housing assignments, preparation of all written materials and publications, outreach to faculty and advisers, connection to families. Oversee the housing assignments for the first-year student population. Working closely with the four Resident Deans of the First Year Experience to ensure that the process goes smoothly and produces the best outcome for the students.

  • Lead and oversee assessment efforts within the Residential Life team, across the first-year students and the House communities.

  • In conjunction with the Resident Deans of First-Year Students, initiate and implement programs intended to align with the College’s mission, foster a sense of class cohesion and belonging (example: Yard socials), relaxation (example: Intramurals), maximize effectiveness as a budding scholar (example: workshop on study habits), and provide connections between the first year and subsequent years at the College.

  • Work closely with the Associate Dean to oversee and coordinate the recruitment, selection, training and assessment of proctors and tutors. The approximate population is 70 proctors and 220 tutors.

  • Coordinate closely with the Student Engagement team who oversees pre-orientation programs, orientation, and convocation, the Office of Undergraduate Education (notably Advising Programs), the Faculty Deans of the Houses, the Health Services, the Harvard University Police, the Office of Physical Resources and Planning, the Office of Alumni Affairs and Development, and the Dean for Administration and Finance.

  • Serve as a member of the Administrative Board and Admissions Committee.

  • Expected to reside at the College or in close proximity to campus, to engage with students in the dining hall and other evening activities regularly, and to be available for special projects as determined by the Dean of the Students or Associate Dean of Students.
