Job Description
TECHNICAL INSTRUCTOR, Biological Engineering, to join the Huang-Hobbs BioMaker Space (https://biomakers.mit.edu/about-us/hhbms/) , a 2,400 sq ft facility located in Building 26 of MIT’s central campus. The facility offers biosafety level 2 laboratory space and a broad range of equipment and is a resource for all active members of the MIT community. A broad range of education programming and training is provided for users by the space staff and members of the community, including the MIT BioMakers student group. The space supports independent extra-curricular projects and hosts projects for various courses offered at the Institute. Will work under direct supervision of the director of BioMaker Space and support all aspects of laboratory operation; provide supervision and enable access for users of the space during a subset of the facility hours; teach training workshops for users (including safety training) and lead sections of introductory laboratory class projects; and support day-to-day operations within the space by overseeing stock materials, performing routine equipment maintenance, and maintaining the lab information management system. Will also have the opportunity to develop workshop materials and to mentor students participating in independent and community projects.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED: bachelor’s degree in STEM or related field; at least four years’ laboratory experience; experience working in biological laboratories across a broad range of systems and techniques, including molecular biology, microbiology, (mammalian) cell culture, microscopy, and analytic techniques; track record of ensuring safety; meticulous attention to detail; excellent record-keeping, interpersonal, and communication skills; willingness to learn on the job; and a commitment to providing rigorous, high-quality research. PREFERRED: master's degree in STEM or related field, and an interest in entrepreneurship.
