TECHNICAL INSTRUCTOR, Chemistry-Undergraduate Teaching Laboratory (UGTL), to co-teach the 5.310/Laboratory Chemistry and 5.301/Chemistry Lab Techniques courses and support the director of the undergraduate laboratory with day-to-day operations. Will--with the director--manage and operate the 5.310 and 5.301 undergraduate laboratory; coordinate with UROP faculty advisors to poll chemistry faculty and secure UROP positions for each 5.301 student; develop/test new experiments for 5.310, 5.301 and URIECA; write letters of recommendation; demonstrate hands-on knowledge of the experimental protocol of and chemical principles behind class experiments; deliver lectures, covering fundamental principles behind experiments for both courses; enforce laboratory safety regulations; train teaching assistants (TAs); organize and orchestrate TA orientations; support activities of TAs by providing demos for experiments, lecture handouts, and specific information on experiments; modify lab manuals and arrange for printing; supervise the writing and administration of laboratory quizzes; collect written reports, organize oral and poster reports, keep grade records, and prepare the final documents for grade meetings; oversee rubric guidelines for grading by TAs; participate in weekly TA meetings; keep lists of chemicals, expendable items, and equipment; maintain minor laboratory equipment, facilities, and supplies; and calibrate major instrumentation and verify that equipment is functional. Will also work with UGTL staff to oversee maintenance of major lab equipment and the ordering of laboratory supplies and chemicals; maintain good housekeeping practices on and around lab benches/sinks/instruments/hoods; administer lab desk assignments and check-out; and maintain up-to-date list of equipment stored in student desks.
REQUIRED: Ph.D. in chemistry or closely related field; demonstrated excellence in teaching; outstanding communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills; and a strong commitment to undergraduate education.
