MAKER TECHNICAL SPECIALIST, MIT Innovation Initiative (MITii), to aid the program director in formulating, implementing, and improving elements of MIT’s makersystem. This includes implementing new equipment and technologies, making activities and programs, and educational materials/techniques for classes/training. Will engage, teach, and mentor beginning makers, especially freshmen; and foster the intersection of making-innovation classes/activities and of making, design, science, and engineering. The position forms a bridge between the making skillset and engineering and science knowledge, working with faculty to integrate engineering/science and making principals, and creating and drafting materials for engineering/scientific activities that integrate the principles of making. Will support Project Manus’ efforts to improve student and faculty making activities, inside and outside of the classroom. This includes providing logistics/maintenance/administrative support for the MakerLodge and FounderLodge programs; managing student volunteers; assuming key roles in Intro to Making freshman seminar and other maker classes; and supporting external activities in the Make Impact Consortium and Higher Education Makerspace Initiative.
REQUIRED: B.S. in a fabrication, scientific, engineering, or other technical field; extensive knowledge of safety and design; strong design and fabrication experience; demonstrated success in teaching and mentoring, fabrication and making, and fostering/supporting community making and projects; teaching experience; ability to work with a broad spectrum of people and as part of a team; strong organizational and time management skills; ability to move from concept to implementation; expertise teaching entry-level fabrication skills (e.g., 3D printing, laser cutting, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, IoT, basic electronics/circuit fabrication, digital fabrication technology); and a desire to develop expertise in woodworking, metalworking, milling, turning, waterjetting, thermoforming, injection molding, chemical/biomaking, and other advanced making techniques.
