State of Massachusetts Nursing Supervisor in Chelsea, Massachusetts

The Registered Nurse III (RN III) functioning as a Nursing Supervisor coordinates and provides nursing care to Veteran adult and geriatric patients by assessing their health status, recording related health data, evaluating their unique physical, psychosocial and age specific needs; evaluating outcomes of care, and adjusting care in collaboration with other healthcare providers.

The RN III adapts interventions to address the biophysical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of the patient, especially the terminally ill and cognitively impaired. They demonstrate effective problem solving by utilizing nursing judgment and interpersonal skills to promote a professional, safe, and productive environment. As a supervisor, the RN III counsel’s unit staff, addresses and resolves conflicts and issues so that patient care and staff moral are not jeopardized. They investigate, address, and resolve complaints by patients or refer to and assist Compliance Officer. The RN III investigates safety hazards, damaged equipment and reports to appropriate personnel for follow-up.

The RN III demonstrates thorough knowledge of all unit activities by observing staff competence and reviewing nursing documentation to ensure compliance with regulatory standards. They delegates patient care assignments appropriately while providing support to staff in decision-making and problem solving.

As part of the team, the RN III communicates with nursing and other departments and disseminates information through memos, inter-shift reports, etc. They identify unit staffing needs for each shift utilizing staffing criteria and acuity levels, and takes appropriate action to ensure safe quality patient care.

The RN III evaluates employee performance semi-annually, reviews competencies, and sets goals for improvement. They maintain the clinical and administrative activities of all the units by utilizing available resources. The RN III participates in educational and professional activities to maintain current in nursing trends, administrative and leadership skills, and to maintain licensure. In addition, the RN III maintains CPR certification.

The RN III intervenes and directs staff during crisis and emergency situations, is knowledgeable of MDS/PPS/Medicare/Medicaid process, has knowledge of the Survey Process: DPH/Joint Commission/VA and reports all necessary information to ADON and/or DON.

/ Schedule: / This is a 24 hour position 2:45pm – 11:15pm; works every other weekend and holidays rotating with other nursing supervisors.

Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility, and (B) six months of which must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.*
