We help our clients understand the specific needs of different patient groups and design and implement products that will work to ensure safety in healthcare.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

Our human factors research and design team includes specialists in human factors, industrial design, biomedical engineering, psychology, and other disciplines with extensive and varied industry experience. We are a multi-faceted consultancy that understands the importance of conducting comprehensive user research to define user needs and requirements; performing creative design explorations while also embracing technological imperatives; and iterating a design solution by conducting usability tests and other evaluations.

We are searching for a Senior Instructional Designer who is ready to harness her or his creativity, experience, and a user-centered design process to produce instructional and training materials to help ensure products can be used safely, effectively, and satisfyingly by the intended users. These materials might include, but will not be limited to, printed or digital Instructions for Use (IFUs), Quick Reference Guides (QRGs), animated guidance, device-embedded help content, medical device training programs, and human factors training programs. The optimal candidate will be a broadly creative individual with a strong design portfolio who wants to serve in a high-energy role on an extraordinary team.

Key responsibilities include, but may not be limited to:

  • Leads hands-on, technical aspects of instructional design projects (which can include instructional materials and training programs across various media) and supports or leads project management tasks.

  • Ensures instructional materials adhere to best practices and standards related to readability, comprehension, learnability, and information presentation.

  • Participates in technical meetings to educate and guide clients towards developing safe, effective, and satisfying instructional materials.

  • Develops requirements for instructional materials by analyzing target audience, objectives, user needs, and business needs. Advises clients which formats are most effective for a given situation (e.g., whether to develop a QRG versus only IFU, if a troubleshooting guide is needed) and ensures a set of accompanying labeling and instructional materials have a consistent and cohesive user experience.

  • Develops content structures, page layouts, and style guides that will guide the design of instructional materials and training programs.

  • Develops conceptual design concepts and instantiate design concepts in the form of detailed learning aids (e.g., user manuals, quick reference cards, training animations).

  • Develops final artwork for instructional and training materials.

  • Supports the creation of prototypes (e.g., printed, interactive animations) to present and support usability tests of instructional materials.

  • Performs design critiques on instructional materials as well as other product user interface components.

  • Provides input to UX and human factors research (e.g., usability testing, heuristic analysis, and competitive benchmarks) and can incorporate findings from these activities into the design.

  • Supports new business development by delivering capabilities presentations to prospective clients, contributing to proposals and creating detailed project cost estimates, plans, and schedules.

  • Effectively sets priorities to work efficiently and manage one’s time.

What makes you a great fit:

  • BS or higher degree in interaction design, human factors engineering, visual design, graphic design, or a related field required.

  • 4-6 years working as a designer in a professional setting, such as a design consultancy or corporate department specializing in instructional documents and/or training program materials.

  • Experience conceptualizing and designing software user interfaces and/or packaging a plus.

  • Exceptional conceptual and visual design skills.

  • Experience leading and mentoring, and collaborating effectively with a diverse range of colleagues (e.g., with varying experience levels and disciplines).

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including strong proficiency in English.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and high comfort collaborating with and advising colleagues and customers worldwide.

  • Experience with human factors / usability engineering in the medical, pharmaceutical, and/or healthcare industry is a plus.
