Job Description:

Academic Counselor, STEM (Grant-funded)

Primary location at the Lynn Campus, regular travel to Danvers Campus

Primary work schedule: Monday, Thursday and Friday 9:00 am-5:00 pm, Tuesday and Wednesday 10:00 am -6:00 pm

Peak hours (leading up to add/drop each semester): Monday through Thursday 10:00am-6:00pm, Friday 9:00 am-5:00 pm

Some occasional evening and Saturday hours.

Under the TAACCCT IV GPSTEM grant, the STEM Academic Counselor reports to the Director of Student Support and Advising and works closely with the grant Project Director and STEM department to support the retention and successful program completion by students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) programs of study. Provides developmental advising assistance to new, returning and transfer students in STEM programs to integrate their academic, personal, career, and educational goals in collaboration with the Student Support and Advising Center on each campus. Requires in depth knowledge of College's STEM academic programs and policy information to impart to students as needed. Works one-on-one, in group advising sessions, at advising and registration events with general, high-risk, and special populations. Responsible for assigned hours in the Student Support and Advising Center as well as activities of on- and off-campuses that support Student Support and Advising Center operations. Also responsible for participating in and supporting students at STEM department activities and events. Provides initial crisis intervention assistance to student in distress and refers for further services.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide developmental advising to new and returning STEM students; assist students in integrating their personal, career, and educational goals; assist students with program selection and understanding the curriculum; help students make academic decisions.

  • Analyze and interpret student data and placement test results; advise students about degree requirements, appropriate academic course loads, and course selection.

  • Work with Coordinator of Experiential Learning to promote in-demand STEM careers with job fairs and employer events.

  • Provide advising and support to students seeking to transfer to another institution.

  • Provide advising and support to new and returning students in making appropriate educational decisions and academic program choices in the context of financial planning.

  • Refer students, as necessary, to other College offices and other support services such as tutoring, Accessibility Services, career services, and college pathway programs.

  • Participate in College programs for professional development and advisor training.

  • Assist in implementing retention activities, such as emailing or making phone calls to current or prospective students, collecting or reviewing data to be compiled (such as retention/attrition reports, recruitment reports, etc.).

  • Commute to either campus for meetings, programs, and events as needed.

  • Present New Student Registration program to large groups of incoming STEM students.

  • Assist with group advising sessions for new and transfer students.

  • Maintain and track general student records in Banner Student Information System

  • Provide specialized advising for ELL/ESL students interested in STEM.

  • Participate in College events, including and not limited to: open houses, information sessions, registration events, and commencement.

  • Work with Student Support and Advising Center colleagues to maintain daily operation of the Student Support and Advising Center and keep advisor resources current.

  • Work as a liaison between the STEM department and the Student Support and Advising Center, as well as advise STEM Club, to increase inter-departmental knowledge and strengthen student support.

  • Implement intrusive advising practices to identify and support students at-risk of failing or withdrawing from courses.

  • Maintain enrollment and outreach records for assigned cohort of STEM students.

  • Facilitate student success and academic support workshops for students.

  • Serve on college committees and teams.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:Reports to the Director of Student Support and Advising

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Counseling, Psychology, STEM discipline, or closely related field required with three years of directly related experience and/or training involving college admissions, academic advisement, career development, or program/project management; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Academic (post-bachelors) or industry experience in a STEM discipline.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong knowledge of current and regional STEM fields and career opportunities.

  • Ability to work evenings and Saturdays.

  • Ability to travel between campus locations.

  • Ability to work effectively within a fast-paced, rapidly growing, intense, and multifunctional office environment.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to effectively interact with people of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Strong presentation/instructional skills.

  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.

  • Working knowledge of Student Informational Systems desired. Knowledge of Banner preferred.

  • Bilingual preferred.

  • Candidates will be required to pass a CORI/SORI background check as a condition of employment.

Additional Information:

SALARY RANGE:Anticipated starting salary is $54,956.00- $58,000.00-. Actual salary will be determined in accordance with classifications determined of MCCC/MTA salary schedule commensurate with education and experience.
