Fitchburg State University Staff Associate, Mathematics Support Spe in Fitchburg, Massachusetts

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Coordinate mathematics preparation courses and support co-requisites for select courses; manage and staff mathematics computer lab; assist with developmental mathematics instruction and monitor student progress. Research, design, and oversee implementation of developmental mathematics curricula and practices taking into account national practices and institutional data. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervise professional mathematics tutors for developmental mathematics and Mathematics Associates for co-requisite instruction. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Independently organize and manage all pre-college or developmental mathematics (aka Math Prep) classes. 2. Consulting with the Mathematics Department Chairperson: ? Serve in the role of Math Associate of up to 10 sections of math Math Prep classes each semester. ? Hire and staff Math Associates for the Math Prep classes. ? Create/update course materials for developmental mathematics ? Train and supervise Math Associates. ? Facilitate communication between faculty and Math Associates in Math Prep courses. ? Select and order course materials for all sections of the Math Prep courses. ? Manage computerized or online instruction systems used in the Math Prep courses. ? As needed, help staff and coordinate Math Associates who teach college-level co-requisite classes. ? As needed, help develop curriculum for co-requisite classes. 3. Consulting with the Mathematics Department Chairperson, Advising and Career Center, Tutoring Center, Office of the Executive Director for Student Success and others as appropriate, focus on student success in foundational mathematics education by: ? Developing and implementing appropriate curricula starting points in the Math Prep courses ? Working with in-progress students and their instructors on assignment completion ? Administering makeup exams ? Referring students and faculty to learning and support services on campus ? Field questions and issues from students, faculty, tutors and math assistants. ? Collaborating with Academic Coaching and Tutoring Center to improve communication between them and the mathematics department 4. Consulting with the Mathematics Department Chairperson, Dean of Health and Natural Sciences, Institutional Research and other university offices and programs: ? Organize summer and winter session instruction in developmental mathematics courses including Summer Bridge program. ? Offer mathematics instruction and Math Prep course availability to Early College High School, Upward Bound and other outreach and community-based programs in the summer and winter sessions. ? Seek external grant funds for the development of the Math Prep courses and novel approaches in mathematics education. ? Report on student performance and retention in developmental math, first-year math pathway, and related STEM courses. ? Research developmental mathematics and co-requisite models at other institutions to inform proposed changes in these areas. ? Represent the university and mathematics department, as appropriate to the position, at divisional, university, and commonwealth-wide conferences and meetings, including committee meetings. QUALIFICATIONS: 1. At least two years of experience teaching mathematics at the secondary-school or higher levels, including the use of standardized testing and online learning or learning management systems. Bilingual English and Spanish skills, supervision and administrative experience preferred. 2. Bachelor's degree in STEM related field or STEM Education (required). Master's in STEM related field or STEM Education 3. Must be able to satisfactorily pass a check conducted by the Criminal History Systems Board (CORI check); a background check satisfactory to the university and must be fully vaccinated and boosted for COVID-19 or have a documented and approved exemption. 4. Ability to perform above duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
