International Data Group Research Director, Storage Infrastructure in Framingham, Massachusetts

IDC's Infrastructure Systems, Platforms and Technologies Group is seeking a Research Director (RD) to support its research and business development efforts on Storage Infrastructure.

The Research Director (RD) for Storage Infrastructure is responsible for developing and socializing IDC’s point of view on storage infrastructure systems, platforms and technologies with enterprises, IT suppliers and service providers. The individual will develop research on business strategies, the impact of relevant technologies on enterprises. This individual will also work with other worldwide and regional analysts to develop a holistic set of thought leadership and actionable research for IT Buyers and Suppliers. This research includes fielding primary surveys, writing papers, delivering presentations, driving consulting work, and advising technology-based clients on business strategies related to their investment in storage infrastructure. The RD is tasked with meeting publication deadlines, inquiry requirements and hitting quarterly and annual financial targets. The RD will also be working within a team of analysts within IDC's infrastructure research practice and coordinating with other IDC technology research analysts around the world.

  • Under the guidance of a Research VP, the Research Director serves as IDC’s co-lead research analyst and evangelist on storage – both business and technical. The RD drives the vision, strategic development, and internal coordination of analysts and resources covering the storage infrastructure research market. The RD must be a thought leader, well versed in the language of technology and related business research, and adept at fielding, analyzing, and articulating the results of frequent and precise infrastructure-focused surveys. The RD will also influence the development of IDC's storage infrastructure related data products. ­­­

  • The Research Director must cultivate and manage executive-level relationships with customers, prospects, and other key industry players in the storage infrastructure market. It is also critical to build and maintain collaborative relationships with IDC's analyst community, consultants, marketing and sales professionals.

  • The Research Director must be proficient in authoring research documents and presentations, with the latter delivered at conferences and in front of customers and prospects.

  • The Research Director utilizes technical knowledge and expertise to develop and implement unique research services for clients and drives exclusive storage infrastructure content for consulting projects geared toward satisfying the requirements of customers.

  • The Research Director must possess proven project and time management capabilities, with an eye toward attention to detail and the ability to communicate data analysis through written reports and presentations. He/she must have a positive, entrepreneurial attitude with the ability to bring vision, creativity, and strategic thinking to the design and management of high-profile research projects while working under pressure and with competing deadlines.

  • Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree a plus

  • 10 or more years of previous technology-centric market research experience or in a related industry (Experience working with an IT infrastructure vendor is preferred in a product management/marketing role is a bonus)

Domain knowledge (must have)

  • All-flash, hybrid-flash and disk-only storage from leading vendors such as Dell EMC, HPE, NetApp and others

  • Block, file and object storage access and data organization

  • Software-defined and server-based storage

  • Servers from leading vendors such as Hewlett-Packard, Dell and Lenovo, and hardware accelerators GPUs and FPGAs, and associated frameworks like CUDA.

  • Data and storage management software

  • Data connectivity and fabric: Ethernet, Fibre Channel, NVMe, NVMe-OF

  • Current and newer storage system architectures, data-persistence and memory technologies.

Domain knowledge (nice to have)

  • Current and next-gen infrastructure virtualization, containerization and orchestration technologies such as VMware vSphere, KVM and Xen, Docker, Kubernetes etc.

  • Software-defined networking,

  • Infrastructure, Platform, Function (Serverless Computing) as a service (Serverless Computing)

  • Development tools like Python, methodologies like CI/CD and DevOps, and data center automation software like Ansible, Puppet and Chef

  • Relational and non-relational databases such as MongoDB, Cassandra, MariaDB and SQL Server.

  • Commercial and non-commercial/open-source operating platforms such as Linux, UNIX and Microsoft Windows

  • Ability to travel (30-40%)

  • This position can be based out of our Framinhgam MA location OR we will consider remote locations with accessibility to a major airport
