State of Massachusetts Industrial Instructor I/Optical Shop in Gardner, Massachusetts
Plans work assignments for inmates, production load the shop and monitors progress. Maintains order tracking and cost monitoring. Generates input for backlog and status summary reports as required. Checks all inmates in and accounts for their presence at all times that they are in the care of industries. Maintain tool control, from a lockable tool crib, with a sign out system & permanent log to ACA standards. Control designated hazardous materials with a sign out system & permanent log to ACA standards. Estimate costs and make out cost sheets as required. Plan stock and raw material needed for production and submit requisitions in time to meet production needs. Plan stock orders to be made for anticipated production needs in conjunction with marketing projections. Maintain security and perform required security checks on a regular basis. Set schedules, perform and record preventive maintenance servicing and inspections on all equipment. Submit requisitions for tooling and consumable supplies as needed by production. Coordinate with the institution to insure that EPA, DEQE, OSHA, and ACA standards are met. Required to properly utilize and manage Optical Lab System software including manufacturing management and streamline production and process flow. Performs all other duties as assigned and required.

Applicants must be a Licensed Optician. Must possess a high degree of technical/business versatility. Must also be able to deal with the unique problems of training, controlling and motivating inmates while maintaining security.
This is a Civil Service position. Candidate must take and pass the next Civil Service Examination for this title and score must be reached in order to be considered for a permanent appointment. The selected candidate will have to submit to a psychological and drug screening and must attend and pass a 4 week Recruit Academy. Please note that salaries for union positions are determined according to the provisions of the respective collective bargaining agreement. The DOC urges bilingual applicants to apply.
