OA ENGAGEMENT SPECIALIST POSITION The OA Engagement Specialist is a 20 hours per week position that is available immediately. It is paid hourly at a rate of about $20 per hour. Most of the hours will be within regular school hours (8-3pm), but after school hours will be part of the job regularly. (Exact hours will be set collaboratively with the person & the leadership team.) The position does not require a teaching license or experience as an educator, although experience working with at-risk teenagers is a big plus. The OA Engagement Specialist will work at the OA Success Center where we serve over 120 learners. The primary role will be to build relationships with students to increase their engagement with school, earn high school credits, and graduate. The role will include: Support for students each day at school ? motivating them to be in school each day, helping them with their classes, counseling them on challenges they face at school, at home, and in the community, and problem solving with them to guide them past conflicts and obstacles Knowing students well ? knowing their talents, interests, and difficulties to help them succeed Outreach to students and families by phone, text, social media, home visits, and neighborhood activities Managing student activities at school and during our ?Beyond the Building? learning activities including managing the daily flow of the school including arrival, dismissal, and lunch times Working with community connections to re-engage students who have dropped out of school or stopped attending Other engagement activities as needed to increase student success The position will be part of the OA Engagement Team ? a small group of dedicated individuals who believe in the promise of all of our learners and work tirelessly to help them overcome obstacles of all kinds to persevere, graduate, and be ready for their future. The position will also play a key role as the liaison between OA and our close partners with the Center for Resilience leading the Alianza Youth Leadership Squad. The Specialist will collaborate extensively with everyone on the Engagement Team, the teachers on the Instructional Team, and the leadership team at OA (Principal, Geoffrey Schmidt and Operations Director, Angela Morales). This is a position that requires outstanding relationship building ? not just to connect, but to motivate, and increase students? belief in themselves. The working location is the OA Success Center at 206 Maple Street, Holyoke, MA. QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to build relationships with students based on mutual respect that result in students increasing their school engagement Strong presence to motivate and guide students to make good choices Ability to collaborate effectively with other educators Ability to work independently such as making decisions on how to work with an individual student or group of students Comfort working in a fast-changing learning environment where innovation and finding creative solutions is the norm Unconditional respect for all learners and their families Ability to create an environment of love and caring for all Comfort and skill working with high school and adult learners who are at risk of dropping out and school failure a must. Successful experience working with such students is a plus.
