State of Massachusetts Assistant Director of Literacy in Malden, Massachusetts

DESE seeks a high-performing educational leader to lead the Department’s literacy work statewide. Across the U.S. we are in the midst of a movement for equity in literacy. Here in Massachusetts, there is broad recognition that while we are #1 in the nation for literacy achievement, the educational system does not serve all students equitably. At DESE, we believe that every student deserves an evidence-based, culturally responsive and inclusive learning experience in ELA and literacy. Through our support to educators focused on curriculum and instruction, we seek to enable equitable high achievement for all students, especially students from marginalized groups such as students of color, multilingual learners and students with disabilities. Within theOffice of Literacy and Humanities, the Assistant Director will lead a team of ELA/literacy content specialists, responsible for supporting the capacity of educators to provide an excellent education in Literacy and Humanities to every student in Massachusetts. The Assistant Director will lead multiple high-profile initiatives including Mass Literacy. Job Responsibilities _Strategy Leadership_ • Lead the Department’s strategic vision and plan for supporting instructional improvement in ELA/literacy with a focus on equity • Maintain literacy budgets and recommend budget decisions, with influence over the spending of $20M annually • Represent DESE and the literacy team’s priorities and vision in working with other Agency offices, advocacy groups, Massachusetts educators, and other stakeholders. *Team Leadership* • Hire, support, and supervise a team of ELA/literacy specialists • Support the literacy team to meet the highest standard of quality as they provide instructional support resources to the field, including: o The Mass Literacy Guide(https://www.doe.mass.edu/massliteracy/) o GLEAM (https://www.doe.mass.edu/instruction/gleam/) o CURATE(https://www.doe.mass.edu/instruction/curate/default.html) o Appleseeds o MA ELA/Literacy Curriculum Framework Supporting Inclusive, Evidence-Based, and Culturally Responsive ELA/literacy Instruction • Provide direct support to school and district leaders on ELA/literacy curriculum, instruction, and assessment implementation • Manage large-scale, high-impact Literacy instructional support projects such as: o OAPL(https://www.doe.mass.edu/instruction/ela/oapl/) o Early Literacy in educator preparation(https://www.doe.mass.edu/edprep/resources/early-literacy.html) o Implementation of the MA Dyslexia Guidelines * Desired Knowledge and Skills* • Strong knowledge of evidence-based early literacy concepts and practices, such as those described in the Mass Literacy Guide and the MA Dyslexia Guidelines • Knowledge of the 2017 Massachusetts ELA/Literacy Framework • Knowledge of and commitment to anti-racism in education, especially anti-racist and culturally relevant instructional practice • Project management skills, including long-range planning, progress monitoring and ability to juggle multiple complex and long-term projects • People management and team leadership skills, including strategic planning and leading a team to promote both a sense of belonging and value among team members and to achieve meaningful goals • Knowledge of instructional systems in schools and districts, including concepts of effective professional development, high-quality curriculum, and the systems and structures that are needed to achieve equity *Desired Mindsets and Attributes* • Commitment to equity in education, and a desire to work with teachers and educational leaders to help all our children receive evidence-based, culturally responsive ELA and Literacy instruction • Unwavering insistence that all children have the right and ability to learn and succeed at high levels, and a demonstrated history of bringing an anti-racist lens to your work • Eagerness for feedback and commitment to continuous improvement • Collaborative and team-oriented approach; interest in working with diverse educators and colleagues to advance our shared goals _Desired Experience_ • Experience teaching in the preK-12 classroom • Experience leading other educators, in a position either with or without formal authority The Assistant Director, Literacy will work within the Department’sCenter for Instructional Supportand will be based at the DESE office in Malden, MA with some travel throughout MA. DESE employees are currently required to report to the office two days per week and may telework up to three days per week. . This position offers some flexibility of office location within the hybrid work model currently being observed. Substitutions: I. A certificate in a relevant or related field may be substituted for one (1) year of the required (A) experience. II. A Bachelor’s degree in a related field may be substituted for two (2) years of the required (A) experience. III. A Graduate degree in a related field may be substituted for three (3) years of the required (A) experience. IV.
