State of Massachusetts Grade 8 Civics Test Development Contractor in Malden, Massachusetts

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's (DESE) Office for Student Assessment Services (SAS)is seeking an equity-oriented contracted employee to assist in the development of an innovative grade 8 civics assessment. The Grade 8 Civics Test Development Contractorwill work with the history and social science test development coordinator and will perform the following duties: * assist in the development of high-quality performance-based task sets and end-of course tests that are culturally responsive and based on anti-racist sources; * evaluate and revise civics assessment materials using an equity-centered approach, including primary and secondary source content, test questions, scoring notes, and scoring rubrics to ensure they are: aligned to the grade 8 civics standards, accurate, grade-level appropriate, anti-racist, and equitable for all students; * assist with the recruitment and selection of a diverse civics educator review committee, * assist with working with the educator committee, including communication with members and attendance at the review meetings; * support additional test development activities to ensure a culturally relevant civics assessment, including: o benchmarking of students’ constructed responses o development and review of administration materials for classroom-based tasks o creation and review of presentation materials for educators and other stakeholders o development of materials for the Department’s website o development of surveys and organization of survey results o creation of alternative assessments for civics, including the MCAS-Alt; * respond to inquiries (emails and phone calls) from school and district staff; * travel throughout the Commonwealth and out-of-state travel as needed; and * other duties as assigned. Preferred Qualifications: Extensive content knowledge of civics and U.S. history, including an undergraduate or graduate degree in U.S. history or a related field. Experience with the grade 8 civics standards from theMassachusetts History and Social Studies Framework. Knowledge of culturally responsive practices and commitment to bringing an anti-racist lens to every aspect of the work. Experience writing and using civics sources and texts for middle school students. Awareness of how bias and sensitivity issues impact diverse groups of middle school students; Familiarity with computer-based testing, including working with and developing different types of test questions. Strong oral and written communication skills, including facilitating meetings, presenting to groups of educators, and communicating clear feedback. Ability to develop online surveys and gather results, including organizing data in spreadsheets and summarizing results. Demonstrated success in working independently, as well as collaboratively with colleagues. Facility in the use of digital technology, including Microsoft products and Adobe Pro, and flexibility in adapting to computer applications. This is a part-time contracted position, 30 hours per week. The expected duration of this position is July 1, 2021 – June 30, 2022. Special Requirements: Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's License or the equivalent from another state may be required.
