The mission for the Office of Family and Student Support within the Center for Educational Options at the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) is to provide programs and support systems that help all students gain the knowledge, skills and values needed to be well prepared for post-secondary options as well as a career and citizenship. DESE collaborates with other state agencies to lead commissions and task forces to establish safe and supportive school programs and policies including the development of framework and assessment tools for school districts in the Commonwealth. Such programs and policies include but may not be limited to: substance use prevention and behavioral health initiatives including substance use screening; Recovery High Schools, teen dating violence prevention and intervention; and positive student discipline.

The Office of Student and Family Support is seeking a contracted employee to perform the

following duties:

  • Provide support for the administration of the Massachusetts Youth Risk Behavior Survey (MYRBS), including:

o Coordinating and finalizing sampling frame

o Coordinating with the survey administrator to notify schools and secure participation:

  • Outreach to local survey administrations to discuss coordination and collaboration where possible;

  • Outreach reach to schools in support of converting refusals;

  • Additional DESE point of contact for schools regarding survey questionnaire, survey procedures and questions and concerns relating to survey administration and participation;

  • Explore options for supporting schools in obtaining school level data;

  • Preparation of documentation and survey materials for scanning and analysis;

  • Coordinate the development and publication of the 2017 Youth Risk Survey Report and other related reports, as appropriate:

o Review and analyze YRBS and School Health Profiles (Profiles) data, as needed;

o Coordinate and finalize page development with Department of Public health (DPH), and develop pages as needed;

o Work with graphic designer on layout/edits;

o Prepare materials for publication;

o Consider opportunities for supplemental reports using Profiles and other data;

o Create merged Profiles data sets;

o Develop materials for dissemination and posting of reports online;

  • C reate a crosswalk of various surveys, assessment tools and frameworks related to school health, safety and climate;

  • Other work to support office/agency goals as needed; and

  • Perform additional duties as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree and at least four years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional educational experience in a specific or related content area, educational program/or service;

  • Knowledge of basic univariate statistics and demonstrated ability to use packaged statistical software program, SPSS preferred, to analyze data;

  • Experience using software including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher and Outlook;

  • Experience in survey project management including instrument development, data collection, cleaning, and analysis, and report writing;

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills;

  • Knowledge of child/adolescent development, risk behavior, and theories of health promotion and disease prevention;

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to assist customers of diverse backgrounds and diverse abilities; ability to deal tactfully with others;

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team;

  • Experience working in schools/educational settings or demonstrated understanding of how schools work and how to work with schools;

This is a part time, contracted position, 30 hours per week, 5 days/6 hours per day.
