State of Massachusetts Math Content Specialist (ESC) in Malden, Massachusetts

The Office for STEM in the Center for Instructional Support at the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) is committed to the vision that all Massachusetts students will have an equitable comprehensive STEM education that fosters a positive STEM identity and enables them to apply their learning to thrive in their everyday lives and participate in informed civic engagement. The Office provides leadership for the development and supporting the implementation of the Curriculum Frameworks in Mathematics, Science and Technology/Engineering, and Digital Literacy and Computer Science. The Office also supports districts’ development of STEM programs that center equity and embody rigorous and culturally relevant curriculum and instruction aligned to these Frameworks. The Office is also responsible for designing STEM resources and providing professional development in these topics. In addition, it links STEM initiatives to other initiatives at DESE. The Mathematics Education Specialist C will work and collaborate on projects in support of the initiatives lead by the Office for STEM and the Center for Instructional Support and centered around racial equity. The selected candidate will research, develop, and disseminate mathematics resources, tools, and networking opportunities for schools and districts that fulfill targeted needs and program priorities; draw from a variety of sources and research to evaluate quality and relevance of resources to district needs; disseminate materials and information across the state; and follow up with schools and districts to evaluate the impact and use of resources provided. The Mathematics Education Specialist will work in the Office for STEM within the Center for Instructional Support, and in close collaboration with the Center for School and District Partnership. The selected candidate for this position will perform the following duties: 1. Create, oversee, and support projects to provide high-quality, culturally relevant standards-aligned resources, tools, and presentations for use by schools and districts, including but not limited to: • high-quality curricular materials, • effective and inclusive classroom practices, • professional development, and • formative assessment and benchmark tools. 2. Facilitate networking activities to promote and support equitable mathematics teaching and learning, such as: • professional development, • sharing of best practices and resources, and • dissemination of materials and information. 3. Conduct analyses to determine school and district needs and to target assistance, such as: • detailed analysis of mathematics achievement and program data, • curriculum alignment with state academic standards, and • district surveys. 4. Work with other Department programs and units, including but not limited to Statewide System of Support, Educator Preparation, Special Education, Student Assessment, and Career and Technical Education/Vocational Education. Review proposals as required and participate in monitoring of professional development institutes. Preferred Qualifications: _ • Demonstrated commitment to and success in mathematics in improving student learning, particularly for historically marginalized students (e.g., students of color, multilingual learners, students with disabilities) • Experience in delivering and/or supporting culturally responsive instruction • Strong K-12 pedagogical mathematics content knowledge and the ability to plan, implement, and adjust instruction in alignment with the 2017 MA Mathematics Curriculum Framework • Track record of success in developing and providing professional development that was engaging and had an impact on the practice of other educators • Adept at effectively managing multiple priorities in high-demand environment • Demonstrated initiative; especially in problem-solving, anticipating risks, and goal-oriented • Experience working with a range of diverse stakeholders and tailoring approach and communication to successfully meet project goals and timelines • Excellent written and oral communication skills • Works from an asset-based and growth mindset for themselves and for students, families, and educators • Knowledge of current research in mathematics education • Familiarity with high-quality mathematics curriculum programs, textbooks, materials, and instructional strategies • Familiarity and experience collecting and analyzing data and program evaluation • Facility in the use of digital technology, including but not limited to spreadsheets and presentation software and flexibility in adapting to computer applications Questions regarding this position or the application process should be directed to Dawn DeRoche at *First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.* Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree and at least four years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional educational experience in a specific or related content area, educational program/or service; a Master’s degree or higher in a specific or related educational content area may be substituted for two years of the required experience -- 30 semester hours equals one year of experience for substitution purposes. Education toward a degree in a specific or related educational content area will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed. .
