Nantucket Cottage Hospital Nurse Educator in Nantucket, Massachusetts

Position Overview The Nurse Educator is a bachelor’s prepared nurse who provides education support to Nantucket Cottage Hospital (NCH) nurses. The Nurse educator has primary responsibility for development and implementation of a competency-based ordination for nurses and support staff. Other responsibilities include on-going education for nurses, assisting in the orientation to new equipment, working with specific nurses to ensure competent, compassionate, individualized, nursing care for patients and families and participating in the Nursing Administrator On-call schedule. In this role, the Nurse Educator, collaborates closely with the Director of Nursing, Nurse Managers and Clinical Nurse Leader. This position report to the Director of Nursing.

  1. Develops an orientation program for all units:

  2. Works with the nurse managers to develop a competency-based orientation program for NCH employed nurses and contracted travel nurses.

  3. Competency assessment is specialty--specific.

  4. Ensures familiarity with hospital policies related to patient safety and care and emergency preparedness.

  5. Develops orientation schedule with preceptor and nurse manager

  6. Schedules check-ins and evaluations throughout the orientation process and for the first year.

  7. Demonstrates excellence in professional nursing practice:

  8. Supports independent nursing practice of professional nurses through collaborative, consultative, and role modeling activities.

  9. Analyzes clinical and non-clinical variables to anticipate patient care needs and predict responses.

    1. Identifies current trends in nursing care and their implications for nursing practice.

    2. Applies new technology, nursing theories, evidence, research findings and experiential knowledge to improve nursing practice.

    3. Responds to change in clinical practice by planning, designing, implementing and evaluating guidelines, protocols, and standards; in collaboration with the Director of Nursing, Chief Nursing Officer and Nurse Managers.

    4. Identifies ethical issues in nursing practice and guides staff and other providers in application of ethical concepts to patient care issues.

    5. Develops, implements, and evaluates education programs based upon assessed learning needs of patients, families and staff:

    6. Identifies staff learning needs and develops and implements education and training to address.

    7. Initiates, supports, participates and contributes to education programs for staff at unit/service/interdepartmental levels.

    8. Facilitates the acquisition of advanced clinical skills in staff nurses, through role modeling, practice and consultation in the clinical setting.

    9. Facilitates education opportunities for attainment of CEUs.

    10. Facilitates ACLS, NRP, PALS and BLS certifications for annual staff competence and training.

  10. Oversees a Preceptor Program:

  11. Works with Nurse managers to develop preceptor program

  12. Assists Nurse Managers with identifying and developing Preceptors.

  13. Assists in developing metrics and monitoring nursing quality

  14. Oversees quarterly pressure ulcer prevalence survey (Massachusetts Patient Care Link)

  15. Assist managers with developing specialty-specific nursing outcome measures

  16. Demonstrates accountability for ongoing personal/professional development:

  17. Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills based on current nursing and health care practices

  18. Identifies own learning needs and goals, and develops/designs a plan to meet them.

  19. Takes responsibilities for leadership and participation on committees and task forces as directed by the Director of Nursing.

  20. Fosters peer support and networking resources.

  21. Fulfills professional role through involvement in professional organizations and activities.

  22. Continually evaluates quality and safety performance, identifies improvement opportunities and plans and implements programs for improvement.

    Essential Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the Position Qualifications:

    • Minimum of a BSN in Nursing

    • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

    • Relevant professional experience in nursing.

    • BLS, ACLS, PALS Instructor
