Position: Seasonal Forestry Assistant - OUTREACH Location: New Bedford GGC - Brooklawn Park Start date: 3/28/2021 End date: 11/20/2021 Number of Positions: 1 Please note, if you are selected for this position and you are hired after August 23, 2021 * the position will automatically revert to a short-term position.* Our short-term positions are not part of the salary scale that is advertised within this job posting. Should this position revert to a short-term seasonal position (less than 90 days), your salary rate will be discussed with you during the interview phase of the process. About the Department of Conservation and Recreation: The Department of Conservation and Recreation manages one of the largest and most diverse state parks systems in the nation and protects and enhances natural resources and outdoor recreational opportunities throughout Massachusetts. DCR is a dynamic agency, and is one of the largest park systems in the nation. The DCR system includes over 450,000 acres of parks, forests, water supply protection lands, beaches, lakes, ponds, playgrounds, swimming pools, skating rinks, golf courses, trails and parkways. The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks qualified applicants for the position of Seasonal Forestry Assistant. A cover letter and resume must be submitted as part of the application process and attached “as relevant” to the requisition. The Seasonal Forestry Assistant will work outdoors in all types of weather. SPECIFIC DUTIES: Assists with leading the canvassing and outreach efforts for the Greening the Gateway Cities Program; able to communicate the objective of the program effectively to a diverse community of homeowners and residents. Able to read maps, record and maintain canvassing and data logs. Interacts with the public to encourage participation in the GGCP; promotes the program effectively and clearly. Assists Forester with scheduling and attending site visits. Assists in the tree planting operations for the GGCP to increase tree canopy cover for the purpose of reducing heating and cooling energy costs to residences and businesses; educates private landowners and the public about proper tree selection, care, and maintenance. Works outdoors in all types of weather. Performs related duties as assigned. Preferred Qualifications: Ability to speak and write (foreign language, if applicable) and translate materials for homeowners who speak (foreign language, if applicable). Knowledge of the principles and practices of applied forestry and wood harvesting. Ability to identify tree species. Knowledge of the types and uses of equipment used in forestry. Knowledge of safety practices used in forestry. Knowledge of the types and uses of hand held power tools such as chainsaws, hedge trimmers, etc. Knowledge of the terminology and standard abbreviations used in forestry. Ability to understand, explain and interpret the laws, rules, regulations, policy, procedures, standards and practices governing assigned agency activities. Ability to follow written instructions. Ability to maintain harmonious working relationships with others. Ability to assemble items of information in accordance with established procedures. Ability to act quickly and make decisions in dangerous and emergency situations. Ability to give oral instructions in a precise, understandable manner. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written expression. Ability to maintain accurate records. Ability to read and interpret documents such as plans, specifications, blueprints, maps, etc. Qualifications - External This requisition will remain open until filled; however, first consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days. Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time experience in forestry or natural resource management, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions: I. An Associate's or higher degree with a major in forestry or forestry management may be substituted for the required experience.* Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
