State of Massachusetts ABE/HiSet Teacher- Part-Time in Northampton, Massachusetts

_GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES_ Instruct parolees, probationers and inmates at all levels of adult basic education and general equivalency diploma (Hi-Set) preparation in small groups and one-on-one._ _ _SUPERVISION RECEIVED_ Works under the direction of the Community Justice Support Center Program Manager _ ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES_* * * Coordinate, supervise and monitor education groups * Make referrals to other external education programs in community * Gather educational history on participants and determine appropriate placement into courses * Develop individual education plans * Provide materials and educational information for participants, in addition to scheduling Hi-Set testing * Select, order and maintain inventory of classroom materials * Required to exercise considerable judgment and work independently * Make regular contact with inmates and House of Correction staff, requiring considerable resourcefulness and persuasiveness; make contacts with state and local agencies * Has access to confidential inmate files * Duties may involve potential risk associated with the care and custody of inmates in a House of Correction * Teach participants at all levels of Adult Basic Education and General Equivalency Diploma preparation, in small groups or one-on-one as needed * Develop/administer tests to determine academic level of each referral. Determine appropriate placement. * Provides educational information for participants through maintenance of catalogs, forms and instructional supplies * Acts as liaison for participants with Department of Education regarding courses, diplomas and books * Maintains student records and prepares reports as required * Keeps attendance records _MENTAL ATTENTION AND VISUAL DEMAND_ Flow of work and character duties requires exceptional mental and visual attention most of the time. _ WORKING CONDITIONS_ Performance of duties may present potential risk of injury typically associated with working with inmates, probationers and parolees. _PHYSICAL DEMANDS_ The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. * Regularly required to stand and walk; talk and hear; lift or carry; push and pull with force; and maintain balance * Occasionally required to climb, stoop, reach with hands /arms & occasionally lift and/or move boxes up to 20 lbs * Manual dexterity required in performing duties * Specific vision abilities required by the position include close vision, distance vision and peripheral vision; reading of written, printed or computer screen data _ _ * Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university and two (2) years teaching experience.
