Citizen Schools Director of Learning Design in Remote, Massachusetts
For nearly 25 years, Citizen Schools has been a pioneer in educational equity. Since opportunity, unlike talent, is not equally distributed, we have provided hands-on learning experiences that ignite curiosity, build confidence and expand horizons for over 50,000 underrepresented middle school students. Together with our partners, including 25,000 career mentors, we have exposed students to ideas and connections, helping them access even better opportunities than previous generations.
Today, we engage underserved students in hands-on learning, in school and after school. Our students are creators and problem-solvers, not just consumers. They become scientists, artists, mathematicians, engineers, writers, and programmers. We also apply best practices from our direct service work to systems-level advancement of STEM mentorship and learning by working with communities.
Together we are transforming education in school, after school, and across communities.
The Catalyst program (https://www.citizenschools.org/catalyst)is a unique opportunity for STEM teachers to explore how Project-Based Learning and Social Emotional Learning are fundamental levers to deepen student learning. Catalyst supports teachers to embed an industry expert into their classroom, offering their students access to exceptional content knowledge while forming mentor relationships for their students.
This role is responsible for ensuring exceptional delivery of hands-on, project-based learning experiences in participating middle school classrooms. The Director of Learning Design will work closely with the Managing Director of Catalyst (MDC) and the Director of Educator Development (DED)to develop a curriculum scope and sequence and training modules which engage teachers in a scaffolded process aimed at designing their own bespoke, interdisciplinary, hands-on learning experiences for their students.
To achieve this, the Director of Learning Design will manage the relationship with the team of external consultants that writes the foundational Catalyst projects, engage in intensive research to keep the team abreast of best practice in the field of experiential learning process and work with the DED to train Catalyst coaches to support teachers, teams, and school leaders through later-stage modules.
This is a remote role based in one of our core markets ( MA, NY, IL, OH, NC, TX) and will report to the MDC. The ideal candidate will be a skilled relationship-builder and facilitator, have knowledge and experience in experiential or project-based learning, and be someone who is excited to bring real-world learning to life through meaningful connections between all stakeholders. They will thrive in a dynamic environment, will be skilled in both the development and execution of programming, and will be adept at both collaborative and self-managed work.
Serving as a leader at Citizen Schools means working in a fast-paced environment that values rapid learning, continuous improvement, and an entrepreneurial approach. Knowing its importance to the success of our work, Citizen Schools is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and we aspire to build a diverse team across our network.
