Position Title: Adult ESL Instructor Date: December 2023 Reports To: Settlement and Education Programs Manager FLSA: Nonexempt GENERAL SUMMARY An English as a Secondary Language (ESL) instructor provides instruction to develop language skills with an emphasis on speaking and listening to adult students at the early and intermediate levels of English proficiency. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Deliver engaging lessons that align with the topics and skills delineated in the Settlement curriculum, address the four areas of language acquisition (speaking, listening, reading, and writing), and connect to the students? vast personal experiences. Tailor lessons to meet the individual needs of students. Use culturally responsive teaching methods while promoting inclusivity in the classroom. Reflect on the success of lessons, and make suggestions for improved lesson delivery and student groupings. Maintain accurate enrollment and attendance records. Participate in a co-teaching model of training. Participate in professional development opportunities. Accept feedback and incorporate suggestions for an effective and positive learning opportunity. Communicate with the Settlement Manager in a timely manner. While it is not necessary to have all of the skills mentioned below, candidates should possess some of the preparation, knowledge and abilities listed. Bachelor?s degree. Graduate certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and/or Master?s in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages preferred. Experience teaching English language learners. Experience living in another culture and learning another language. Knowledge about the process of language acquisition Familiarity with MS Word, PowerPoint, Google Workspace, overhead projectors. Familiarity using technology to enhance learning: Kahoot, Quizlet, Youtube etc. Bilingual fluency ? Spanish/English; Portuguese/English or Haitian Creole/English to facilitate communication with immigrant groups in our North Shore area. A sense of empathy and a desire to work with immigrant adult students. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including strong public speaking skills needed by a teacher. The ability to establish clear professional boundaries. The Gables prohibits any coaching or instruction outside of the contractually agreed-upon classes mentioned in the instructor?s hiring agreement with The House of the Seven Gables.
