POSITION PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVE The Teaching Assistant is responsible for supporting each youth?s social, emotional and intellectual growth and development. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS The Teaching Assistant is responsible for assisting youth and teachers in a private residential school setting for behaviorally disordered adolescents between the ages of 11 and 22. Teacher Assistants help build happy and purposeful relationships with students, teachers and all members of an interdisciplinary team. They play an essential role, contributing their skills in helping pupils grow, learn and develop into productive members of the community. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILIITES The Teacher Assistant is responsible for the overall supervision and daily class functionality as well as supporting the emotional wellbeing of the students. Other duties include: ? Assisting youth with their morning activities of daily living (ADL) skills ? Administer medications to youth and maintain proper documentation of such ? Providing a healthy safe and clean learning environment for children ? Assists teachers in implementing lessons for assigned academic and skills classes ? Responsible for teaching a career education class twice per week ? Responsible for teaching a bullying prevention summer unit ? Responsible for completing a Youth Readiness Assessment Tool as needed and on time ? Using a variety of instructional and assessment strategies, as directed by the Teacher, to meet individual student needs ? Assisting students with assignments or difficult concepts one to one or in small groups ? Helping pupils stay focused during class hours ? Supervising special events and school outings QUALIFICATIONS A successful Teaching Assistant candidate will have various prerequisite skills and qualifications needed to do the job well, these include: ? Bachelor?s degree preferred, but not required. ? A valid driver?s license and a driving record acceptable to Stevens? insurer. ? An acceptable criminal records background check. ? A reference from an immediate supervisor. ? The ability to communicate clearly, logically, concisely and effectively both orally and in writing. ? Must be able to come to work promptly and consistently. ? Must possess good organization and time management skills. ? The ability to work in a collaborative manner with all members of the interdisciplinary team ? The ability to remain calm during stressful situations ? The ability to perform youth restraints safely and effectively when necessary. ? The ability to exercise good judgment on a day-to-day basis and in crisis situations. ? Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries with youth and adults. ? Flexibility to adjust assigned work schedules as required by programmatic needs
